San Rafael Lagoon, Tourist Destination

San Rafael Lagoon

The San Rafael Lagoon is located in the northern part of Campo de Hielo Norte (Northern Ice Country), forming part of the San Rafael Lagoon National Park, the largest of the Aysén Region in the Eastern Chilean Patagonia.

The main attraction of the San Rafael Lagoon is the San Rafael Glacier, also known as the San Valentín glacier, the tallest glacier of the Northern Ice Country.

The journey by sea to the San Rafael Lagoon passes through Patagonian channels and different islands. On this journey one can observe the vegetation comprised mainly of a jungle species rich in ferns.  The fauna of this region highlights a large variety of birds.

The arrival to San Rafael Lagoon is carried out amidst dodging ice blocks of different sizes, forms, and shades of blue.  The cruise ship casts anchor in the area for 5 to 8 hours and sends out rowboats or other small boats which bring tourists closer to the San Rafael Glacier.  An impressive spectacle is the chunks of ice that crumble off the glacier and splash into the water.
