Chile : Guide to National Parks : Conaf

Government of Chile, CONAF

CONAF was created in 1970 as a dependent organism of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Its mission is as follows: "to guarantee society the sustainable use of the forest ecosystems and an efficient administration of the National System of Protected Wildlife Areas of the State, with the objective of contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of current and future generations".

The fulfillment of this mission is carried out through 4 objectives:

1.- To contribute to the increase and sustainable use of the forest resources.

2.- To conserve natural ecosystems representative of the biological diversity of Chile.

Conaf administrates the National System of Protected Wildlife Areas of the State which is comprised of 32 National Parks, 47 National Reserves, and 13 National Monuments.  These units represent an important part of the major natural environments of Chile and include a great variety of biological, physical, and cultural resources covering an area of more than 14 million hectares or 19% of the continental territory of the country.  In this aspect, the main work of Conaf has to do with the recovery of the threatened flora and fauna and the fostering of eco-tourism.

3.- To contribute first and foremost to the improvement of the quality of life of the rural population by means of forest actions.

These actions consist of the conservation and sustainable management of the native forest, the forestation of small properties, and the transfer of technology.

4.- To protect the forest ecosystems from the actions of harmful agents.

Referring principally to the threats that the ecosystems of our country suffer such as forest fires, desertification, unsanitary conditions for fauna and flora, and the management of river basins.
