Chile : Hot Springs Guide : Socos Hot Springs

Socos Hot Springs

Socos Hot Springs. Entrance

Socos Hot Springs are located in the Fourth Region of Coquimbo, 231 mi. (370 km.) north of Santiago and 24 mi. (38 km.) southeast of Ovalle and they have been one of the most popular hot springs in the area for over 50 years.

This thermal center is situated next to an inlet, surrounded by the area's typical vegetation that provides shelter from the sun's harmful rays that shine almost year round. This is the perfect place for sun worshippers who also enjoy the healthful benefits of the thermal waters.

These waters are saturated with bromide, and also contain iodine, magnesium, and sodium. They flow at a pleasant temperature of 82°F (28°C), thus called hypothermic. One of the unique characteristics of Socos is that its waters are potable and can be ingested in the form of tonic water or with apple and mandarin flavors. This water, declared a "source of health", can be sold to visitors who want to take some of their favorite water home with them.

It is said that the metabolism benefits from the tepid waters of Socos, and that they also help combat stress and tension. Guests can enjoy thermal baths in the pool or underwater pressure massages, steam baths, and mud baths.

You can participate in a number of activities in and around the area: hikes and walks throughout nature, taking photos of flora and fauna, horseback rides, and picnics.

If there is time you should visit some nearby places of interest like the beaches of Tongoy, Guanaqueros, or La Herradura. Enjoy sun, sand, and sea! You might also consider the beautiful Fray Jorge National Park with some of the most unique forests in the world.

If archeology and history is your cup of tea, you can't miss Enchantment Valley (Valle del Encanto), declared a National Monument for its petroglyphs, pictographs, and stone mortars (piedras tacitas) that date back to 2000 B.C. The town of Barraza is one of Chile's oldest towns exhibiting a colonial church that dates back to the year 1681.
